Energy Intensity

Energy Intensity

The amount of energy used to produce a particular product, or to perform a specific unit of work. In context of the water-energy nexus, energy intensity is used to compare the relative energy values of different types of water supply resources, typically expressed in kilowatt hours per acre-foot (kWh/AF) or per million gallons (kWh/MG). Energy intensity can also be used to express the amount of energy used to perform a specific unit of work, such as the number of kilowatt hours used to treat a unit of raw water to potable standards.
